Wednesday 2nd May, 2007 Top 10 Adobe Lightroom Tips. Tip Number 4 - The Ultimate Crop
Photoshop Lightroom can crop or straighten and image and whilst the straightening control is excellence, cropping is a different story. Here is a technique that will make it all seem worth while. Crop with the lights out and you will never go back to any other way of cropping again. It’s quite simple so here goes:
- Choose the image that you want to crop and go to the develop module - Press ‘D’
- Press ‘R’ to get the crop overlay tool and start to crop the image. You will see that the area outside the crop is dimmed to help you see what is cropped away. Let’s see if we can improve on this.
- Click the clear button on the right end of the toolbar to reset the cropping border (and undo your crop).
- Press the letter ‘L’ twice to enter Lights Out mode. Everything will be hidden and the photo will be centered on a black background.
- Notice that the cropping border is sill active.
- Now try cropping and watch the difference - you really see what you are going to end up with, it’s the ultimate way to crop.
- When you are finished press ‘L’ to turn the lights back on.
That’s it - this method is a great way to start processing an image and can dramatically improve the ‘wow’ factor of a picture.
